Nomads Botswana comes from humble beginnings: a handful of eager gentlemen, including associate Nomads members from Zimbabwe and South Africa who were working in Botswana in 1993, decided to form a club called ‘Gomads Botswana’. Having only one golf course in Gaborone at the time did not deter the new members from enjoying their monthly outings to the fullest.

Based on the same Nomads playing format, the Gomads membership started at 60 and continued to grow. Because there was quite a transient membership at the time, since many members worked on short term contracts, there was reluctance from Nomads in Zimbabwe to welcome Botswana into their fray, and for good reason – Nomads was about term commitment and remaining dedicated to furtherance of golf – although they had top honours for Nomadic tendencies!

Nomads South Africa, being the Nomads Founder, was still reviewing Botswana and its application to become part of the Nomads society in Southern Africa in 1997.So eager were these golfers to become a recognised Nomads club, that the Gomads Captain, John Marshall, along with Gary Johns and Julian Harris, paid a visit to their South African partners and invited them up for a monthly game so that they could see for themselves. Then SA National Chairman, Nigel Tipping, with Bones Nagel, Doug Watson and Mike Tarr among others, paid a friendly visit to one of our Gomads games and were duly impressed. Things had settled into some stability of membership and after a few constitution changes late in 1997, South Africa gave Botswana its blessing to form the first club outside of South Africa and Zimbabwe.
